Here’s a rare oddity – custom built to order by Gibson during 1961, a melding of a Gibson L-5 style six string neck and a Gibson Mastertone RB-3 banjo pot.
This Gibson L-5 6-String Custom Banjo – unique instrument is in very good complete and original condition. Aside from the typical appointments of the L-5 neck, with multiple layers of binding around the ebony fingerboard and head, Mother of Pearl for the block position markers, flowerpot inlay and Gibson logo, and the RB-3 style pot with mahogany resonator, there’s an Oettinger style 6-string tailpiece and Grover Roto-Matic tuners. All metal parts are nickel plated.
The scale length is 24 inches, much shorter than a standard L-5 but half an inch longer than the Byrdland, which was introduced a few years earlier. The nut width is 1 11/16ths, a fairly usual size.
A period hard-shell case is included, black with purple lining.
