The Vega Artist Tenor banjo was a professional grade instrument made by one of the top – from the turn of the 20th century to the 1930s – American musical instrument producers. However, just about the time the Dopyera Brothers and George Beauchamp started National to produce their new resophonic guitars, the popularity of banjos began to drop, and by the 1930s many banjo players had shifted to guitar.

A relatively ornate model, the mid 1920’s Vega Artist tenor banjo features a 19 fret neck, gold plated hardware and the distinctive ‘Pie Back’ segmented resonator in quilted maple. This example uses original hardware except for the tuners, which are modern gold-plated models with faux pearl buttons. The fingerboard and headstock use an engraved Mother of Pearl inlay set, which is very nice. Some of the original lacquer finish still adheres to the headstock inlay (adhesion of lacquer to pearl over time can be an issue) and it has aged to a lovely amber tint.   The heel has a very nicely preserved carving;  on many examples, especially if a refinish has been done, the carving has been sanded off.

This fine vintage instrument is sold with a non-original hard shell case.

The Vega company went out of business in the 1930’s though its name was used by many companies over the years, including Martin.   It is presently a brand of the Deering Banjo company, who offer models based on the historic Vega designs.
