Built during 1992, this William Laskin 7 string steel string guitar vividly illustrates Laskin’s mastery of his craft, flawless in design and execution.
William Laskin worked with Jean Larrivee in the 1970’s and has gone on to become one of the world’s most accomplished guitar builders, while also playing, writing books and supporting musical and artistic causes. He has won the Order of Canada for his work in support of the arts.
Starting with his standard cutaway body, this William Laskin 7 string uses the traditional pairing of a Sitka Spruce top with Indian Rosewood for the sides and three-piece back; the neck and blocks are Mahogany, the fingerboard, bridge and headplate are Ebony. An L R Baggs iBeam pickup is installed, with the output through an end pin jack.
As a custom build, this intriguing guitar adds a low string by way of a special ramp supporting a movable section of the nut, somewhat similar to the idea of a sliding banjo capo. This allows rapid changes of the low string’s range.
And then, of course, there’s the inlay. William Laskin is very well known for the creativity and quality of his inlay work. Here, a stag or buck – a male deer with antlers is depicted between frets 11 and 18, in a mixture of engraved woods and, it appears, ivory for the antlers. This guitar is old enough that small amounts of ivory were still used, and here appears in the nut, saddle, sliding nut components, and the inlaid antlers.
This is a quietly spectacular, unique guitar in excellent condition.
