Fender Pro Amp TV Front 5B5 Circuit Tweed, 1952

Brand:

The Fender Pro Amp, first named Professional from 1946 to 1948, was aimed at performing guitar players and vocalists and put out a whopping 15 watts. From 1946 to mid 1953, it used a tweed-covered ‘TV Front’ cabinet as seen here.   The Pro amp was discontinued in 1965 and became the Pro Reverb amp, following the pattern Fender was using with other non-reverb amps.

Here we’re looking at a Fender Pro Amp dating to 1952 with the 5B5 circuit.  The 5B5 circuit was used from 1951 to 1954 and the circuit diagram can be viewed here.  The amp uses a pair of 6L6 power tubes, 6SC7 pre-amp tubes, and a 5UG4 rectifier tube. At the time this amp was built,  power had risen from 15 watts to around 18, ultimately getting to 25 watts before the amp was heavily re-designed for 1960.   The 15 inch speaker adds huge presence and bass response – these are fantastic sounding amps.

These amps have four inputs – two marked Instrument and two marked Microphone. Controls are a Tone control and two Volume controls, for the Instrument and Microphone inputs. The control panel also features a pilot light, on/off switch, and fuse holder.

This Fender Pro amp is in good working order, but is not totally original; the cabinet was apparently re-tweeded and the grille cloth replaced many years ago and the 15 inch Jensen P15N speaker, which dates to 1955, has been re-coned. The output transformer dates to the very early 1950’s and extra support brackets have been added.  It’s currently loaded with a Groove Tubes tube set.
