The Fender Super Champ development started in 1982 with newly hired Paul Rivera leading the engineering team. Their first project was updating the classic 5-watt amp to 18 watts with reverb, drive and master volumes, hand wired with point to point techniques. Some versions, like this, added a 10 inch speaker derived from the ElectroVoice EV Force 10.
Paul Rivera had been running Rivera Amplifiers and associated with Valley Arts, designing and repairing amps for top touring and recording musicians like Lee Ritenour and Larry Carlton. He chose the EV for its efficiency and output, plus its solid reliability when used on extended tours and gigs. The amps might need tube changes, but the speakers would not blow.
This fairly rare example dates to 1983 and has the EV Force 10 derived speaker option, which takes the amp weight up to a surprising 33.25 pounds – this is a solidly built amp. It’s in overall good condition, and with 18 watts and a high quality efficient speaker, it makes its presence known.
