Martin Style 1 Soprano Ukulele Mahogany, 1950s

Martin Style 1 Soprano Ukulele Mahogany, 1950s

The Martin Style 1 Soprano ukulele first appeared in 1917 and was built into the 1960’s, and has now been replaced by the Martin S1 ukulele. In the later part of the 1900’s and into the 1920’s and 1930’s, the ukulele and Hawaiian music (including steel guitar) were very popular, and Martin wanted part of the market. Though there were some prototypes built before WW1, Martin’s designs were not finalized until 1917 and the introduction of the Style 1 and Style 2; the Style 3 appeared in 1924.

Eastman MD815-V F-Style F-Hole Mandolin Antique Varnish

 Eastman MD815-V F-Style F-Hole Mandolin Antique Varnish

The Eastman MD815-V F-Style F-Hole Mandolin is one of the most recognisable mandolin designs, based on the groundbreaking work of Orville Gibson in the late part of the 19th century, blending traditional mandolin and violin construction principles.  The F-Style mandolin has become one of the benchmark instruments for country, bluegrass, celtic, and traditional music forms.  And, if you take a listen to Chris Thile, they can do Bach to the full potential of the player.  Closely related to the Eastman MD814-V model, the F soundhole and its enhanced treble attack tilts the Eastman MD815-V towards Bluegrass and Country repertoires, compared to the F-holes on the MD815/V.

C F Martin Style 1 Soprano Ukulele, 1917

  C F Martin Style 1 Soprano Ukulele, 1917

Here’s something special – a century old C F Martin Style 1 Soprano ukulele, built during the uke’s first rise in popularity. Eventually, the Ukulele became so popular that Martin had to expand their production facility. The Ukulele started to gain attention in the early years of the 20th century, and C F Martin made a few examples around 1906. However, these were built more like guitars and the relatively heavy bracing did not work well. In 1916, the company launched a new version with traditionally lighter construction and these were well received.

It features a modern 25.5 inch scale length, spruce top, and figured maple back and sides. The neck of this Stephan Thumhart Romantic Guitar is maple with ebony for the fingerboard and pin bridge. It has had many repairs over its nearly two hundred year history, but works well.
