Fender Precision Bass Sunburst, 1959

 Fender Precision Bass Sunburst, 1959

This is an exceptional treat – a Fender Precision Bass Sunburst dated to January of 1959, with the original tweed case, possibly original but certainly period strap, and brought in with the 1957 Fender Bassman amp (sold separately) the owner used in a band called the “Down Unders”. Leo Fender introduced the Precision Bass in 1952, following the lead of the very successful Telecaster line. The use of the term ‘Precision’ in the name refers to the addition of frets to the bass. Until this time, bass players used fretless upright basses, and so pitches could vary from time to time.

The Fender Jazz Bass was launched in 1960 as part of an effort to capture the interest of serious jazz bass players still using upright acoustic instruments. The Jazz Bass was built until 1981, and has since been offered in a wide range of models based on the original concept. Here we’re treated to a Fender Jazz Bass in Olympic White finish, dating to 7 May 1965 and built at the Fender plant in Fullerton, California just after the company’s purchase by CBS.

Fender American Standard Precision Bass Black, 2015

Fender American Standard Precision Bass Black, 2015

The Fender American Standard Precision Bass is the current ‘Standard’ model of the bass whose 1951 introduction changed the way music is presented, performed and recorded.
At the time Leo Fender introduced a bass to match the quickly-accepted Telecaster and Esquire models, bass parts were normally played on acoustic, upright basses. For all of their great points, there are a number of limitations to the upright bass; it’s big, fairly heavy, with a limited amount of volume.
