Gretsch 6131 Jet Firebird, 1962

 Gretsch 6131 Jet Firebird, 1962

Here’s a rarity – a Gretsch 6131 Jet Firebird in great condition and dating to 1962, its second year as a double cutaway.   This model is perhaps most visually associated with the late Malcolm Young of AC/DC.   The Gretsch G6131 Jet appeared in 1955, following the 1953 release of the Duo-Jet, perhaps as the Gretsch response to the Gibson Les Paul. At that point it featured a single cutaway body with an arched top – but instead of being solid, the body was chambered to reduce weight and produce a more ‘acoustic’ tone, towards Gretsch’s other arched-top models. The pattern of an archtop-style floating bridge rather than a fixed bridge like the Les Paul was still used.

Sold Out and Discontinued! Godin Multiac ACS Denim Blue Flame

Sold Out and Discontinued! Godin Multiac ACS Denim Blue Flame

The Godin Multiac ACS SA in Denim Blue Flame is a direct descendant of a Chet Atkins idea and is intended as a ‘crossover’ guitar for those coming to nylon strings from the electric world.    With this in mind, the neck is slightly narrower than a Classical or Flamenco guitar, and the fingerboard is crowned.   The chambered body and solid neck of the Godin ACS SA are Mahogany,  with a Richlite fingerboard – a composite material that does a good job of simulating Ebony.  The top of this model is a figured Maple Veneer with a lovely translucent denim blue shade, providing an unusual and quite attractive appearance.

Gibson Firebird X Redolution, 2011

 Gibson Firebird X Redolution, 2011

The Gibson Firebird X was one of Gibson’s efforts to fully modernize the electric guitar. It starts with the basic ‘reverse’ offset chambered body built of Ash, and a set Maple neck with Maple fingerboard. The headstock is a more traditional Gibson layout rather than the ‘Fender-esque’ Firebird design. There are three new Firebird FBX mini-humbucker pickups, a tune-o-matic bridge with stop tailpiece, but from there everything is different.

Charvel Surfcaster 12 Red, 1992

   Charvel Surfcaster 12 Red, 1992

Combining influences from several manufacturers, the Charvel Surfcaster 12 chambered electric 12 string was built from 1991 to 1995 by Fuji-Gen in Japan.   That plant makes many higher end models for several brands, and quality is very high throughout this guitar.  The basic construction of the Charvel Surfcaster 12 uses the proven Fender bolt-on design.

Airline Folkstar Electric Resophonic Guitar by Eastwood, Red

Airline Folkstar Electric Resophonic Guitar by Eastwood, Red

The Airline Folkstar, improved and re-issued by the Eastwood guitar company, brings back the 1950s Valco Folkstar resophonic aesthetic, but with a pair of pickups and a reasonable price.  Airline guitars were built by Valco, one of the largest instrument manufacturers in the world, from 1958 to 1868 when the company folded. The original Airline Folkstar used Valco’s Res-O-Glas body construction – fiberglass resin on wood – with a single resonator cone. It was entirely acoustic, and never had pickups

Godin Multiac Grand Concert Satin Gloss, 2002

Godin Multiac Grand Concert Satin Gloss, 2002

The Godin Multiac Grand Concert has become a very successful and immensely practical instrument, and is based directly on the Gibson Chet Atkins CE Classical Electric from 1981.
By the early 1980s, Chet Atkins had shifted largely to playing nylon string guitars, but the instruments available at the time were strictly acoustic and not really suited to the realities of touring, and amplified or broadcast stages. On Atkin’s request, Gibson produced two models of a solidbody nylon string guitar, using Mahogany for the neck and a slab body, adding a Spruce top.
