Gibson Les Paul Custom Black, 1974

First appearing in 1953, the Gibson Les Paul Custom began as an upmarket version of Gibson’s new solidbody, with a solid Mahogany cap instead of Maple and P90 pickups and a dramatic black finish. Here we’re looking at a Gibson Les Paul Custom in Black, built likely during 1974 at the Gibson plant in Kalamazoo, Michigan. At this point, Gibson was well into planning their move to Nashville, but the new plant was not ready until 1984.

Gibson Les Paul Custom 1954 VOS Reissue Black, 1992

Introduced as the top of the line in elegance and function, the Gibson Les Paul Custom 1954 model was presented in tuxedo style finish – black, white trim, and gold hardware. Unlike the original Les Paul gold-top models which paired a carved Maple top with a mahogany body, the new Custom’s body was entirely Mahogany. New hardware appeared, as well; the new, gold-plated ABR ‘tune-o-matic’ bridge and stop tailpiece, and the Seth Lover designed, single coil ‘staple top’ Alnico V neck pickup with a P-90 at the bridge.

Collings SoCo Deluxe Thinline Electric Sunburst, 2009

The Collings SoCo Deluxe is an extremely well crafted take on the semi-solid, thinline archtop guitar concept that dates back to the 1958 introduction of the ES-335.The SoCo Deluxe is built with a carved, quilted Maple top on a carved Mahogany back, Mahogany sides and neck and a bound Ebony fingerboard. Mother of Pearl is used for the split-parallelogram and Collings logo inlays.

Lame Horse Gitjo 6-String Guitar Banjo, 2009

This unusual item from Lame Horse instruments in Austin, Texas – a Gitjo, their version of the six-string banjo, is for guitarists who need the tonality of the banjo but fingering and chord structure of a guitar. This example dates to 2009 and is an early one-off creation, not a production model.

Breedlove DM Custom Left Handed ‘Revival’ Acoustic Guitar, 2009

Basing its design on the classic square-shoulder Dreadnought (the D) with Mahogany back, sides and neck (the M) and pairing that with a Sitka Spruce top, the Breedlove DM Custom Left Handed also features pre-war style scalloped bracing and an aged-toner top. The fingerboard and bridge are both Ebony, and the rosette evokes the simple patterns of classics like the D-18.

Teye Coyote NAMM Prototype Copper, 2014

This Teye Coyote from 2014 is one of the rarest types of instruments, a trade show prototype built to spark and gauge interest in the concept before production really begins. The classic Gretsch White Falcon was introduced this way, as a showcase at 1954 trade show. That showcase drove a lot of orders, which was a little awkward because Gretsch hadn’t intended it a production item!
