Gibson J50 Slope Shoulder Jumbo Guitar Natural, 1953

Gibson J50 Slope Shoulder Jumbo Guitar Natural, 1953

The Gibson J50 Slope Shouldered jumbo model was introduced in 1947 as an ‘upgrade’ to the successful J-45, with a natural finish showing off the higher quality Spruce top. The J-50 was built until 1982, shifting to a square shoulder body design for 1969, and has been reissued from time to time. This is a relatively early Gibson J50, built during 1953 at the Gibson Parsons Street plant in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Built almost exactly like the iconic J45, this J50 uses Adirondack Spruce for the top and top bracing, with Mahogany for the back, sides, neck, body blocks, linings and back bracing.

Gibson Country Western SJN Acoustic, 1957

Gibson Country Western SJN Acoustic, 1957

The Gibson Country Western began its life as the SJN, or Southern Jumbo Natural finish, in 1956 and was quickly renamed. The SJ itself first appeared in 1942 and replaced the J-55 built from 1939 to 1942. As one might suspect, this model was targeted towards the Southern American States, especially those south of the Mason-Dixon line.

Gibson SJN Country Western Dreadnought Steel String Guitar, 1964

Gibson SJN Country Western Dreadnought Steel String Guitar, 1964

The Gibson SJN appeared in 1956 as a natural top version of the successful Southern Jumbo, and had the model name ‘Country Western’. In 1962, square shoulders arrived, and the name was lengthened to ‘SJN Country Western’. The model was discontinued in 1978. This example dates to 1964, with the square shoulders and three-point pickguard. The top is Spruce, with mahogany for the back, sides and fingerboard, with Rosewood for the fingerboard and adjustable bridge.

Martin D41 Steel String Dreadnought Guitar 2008

Martin D41 Steel String Dreadnought Guitar 2008

The Martin D41 appeared in 1969 as a midpoint between the standard D-28 and the top of the line D-45 dreadnought models. Here we have a very nice Martin D41 built during 2008 at the Martin plant in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. It has one one small ding in the top but otherwise is in good overall shape. The nitrocellulose lacquer finish is starting to sink, which is to be expected on a guitar now 11 years old.

The neck is Mahogany, with a Ziricote head plate, and Ebony is used for the bridge and bound fingerboard. Mother of Pearl is used for the Bourgeois headstock inlay and the snowflake position marker sets. The top is enclosed in an old-style Herringbone inlay, and the back has a ‘Zipper’ center strip.  Open gear,  nickel plated Waverly tuners – made in Bozeman, Montana, not far from the Gibson Acoustic shop – are at the head.
