Gibson TB4 Snakehead Trap Door Tenor Banjo, 1924

Gibson TB4 Snakehead Trap Door Tenor Banjo, 1924

Here’s a lovely older instrument, built around 1924 – The Gibson TB4 Snakehead, trap door tenor banjo, with Maple for the neck, rim and folding ‘trap door’ resonator. This fine instrument has its original parts, though the case is long gone, and was built at the end of the Lloyd Loar era (1911 to end of 1924), which produced many historic innovations. The Gibson TB4 was part of the TB or Tenor Banjo series introduced in 1921 as Gibson attempted to stabilize its place in the banjo market.

Twisted Wood Koa Concert Ukulele KO-1000C

Twisted Wood Koa Concert Ukulele KO-1000C

Here we have a Twisted Wood Koa Concert Ukulele. Built using solid Hawaiian Koa for the top, back and sides, the neck is Mahogany with Ebony used for the fingerboard and bridge. In a departure from traditional Ukulele construction, a pin-style bridge as found on steel string guitars is used. This type of bridge is much easier to restring than the tie-block type found on traditional Ukes, and on Classical and Flamenco nylon string guitars.

Pedro de Miguel Flamenco Negra Guitar, 1999

Pedro de Miguel Flamenco Negra Guitar, 1999

Here we’re looking at a Pedro de Miguel Flamenco Negra Guitar, built during 1999 and showing signs of being well used for its intended purpose.  Traditionally, Flamenco guitars are built very lightly, with Spruce tops and Cypress for the sides and back, and with a low action.  The goal is to produce a bright, percussive and responsive tone with fast attack.   Because of the light colour of Cypress wood, these are referred to as Flamenco Blanca guitars.

G W Barry M Body Cutaway Indian Rosewood, 1995

 G W Barry M Body Cutaway Indian Rosewood, 1995

The G W Barry M Body guitar is a very successful and versatile design based on the classic OM introduced by Martin, with a long scale neck on a 000 sized body. G W Barry has been building for decades starting with years for Jean Larrivee, and his skill at not only building but also voicing is evident in this 23-year old M body cutaway model. This particular guitar was recently rebuilt by Barry, with work including a neck reset with fret dress and a neck-off refinish of the top that included a repair to a top crack.

Martin 00-16E Granadillo Steel String Guitar

Martin 00-16E Granadillo Steel String Guitar

The new Martin 00-16E model starts from the classic 00, or Grand Concert body size, but in place of Mahogany or Indian Rosewood for the back and sides uses Granadillo. Granadillo is also known as Mexican Rosewood or Platymiscium Yucatanum. In Central and South America, it’s often used under the name Macacauba for musical instruments. Its density and hardness help it deliver a bit more top end than true Rosewoods, but still has bottom end and warmth.
