Gibson F5 Master Model Mandolin Vintage Varnish, 2003

Here’s a very rare treat – a Gibson F5 Master Model mandolin, built at the Nashville custom shop, signed by Charles Derrington and dated September 26, 2003. Orville Gibson revolutionized the instrument building worlds at the end of the 19th century, brining Violin concepts and construction methods to both mandolins and guitars. This was the beginning of all the arched-top guitars and mandolins that are now common to us. In 1919, Lloyd Loar joined Gibson, and before he left in 1924 produced significant designs including the F5 mandolin. The instruments Loar worked on are among the most sought after.

Martin D16H Steel String Dreadnought, 1992

The Martin D16H was built from 1991 to 1993, and sought to combine vintage D-18 elements with modern neck profiles and led to the D-18V models. Relatively rare, the Martin D16H is one of the hidden gems from the Martin line. Lightweight and built as well as the other Dreadnought models and like the D-18, the D16H features a Sitka Spruce top with Mahogany for the sides, back, body blocks and neck.

Kammerer Scorpius Thinline Electric Guitar, Cherry

The Kammerer Scorpius was Jon Kammerer’s original guitar design. Here built with a carved Cherry body and Maple neck with Ebony fingerboard, these are well made instruments.
Jon Kammerer has been building for over twenty years although he is not a household name. Aside from his innovative custom guitar work, his shop is also built to manufacture components, such as necks, for other builders.

William Laskin Flamenco Blanca Guitar, 1987

The Laskin Flamenco is built using a Sitka Spruce top paired with a Cypress back and side set, and Cedro or Spanish Cedar for the neck, linings, and back bracing. Construction is the traditional Spanish ‘slipper foot’ style – the neck, heel and neck block are one unit, with the sides slotting into the heel. This is in distinct contrast to other methods where the neck and body are built separately, often using a dovetail or mortise and tenon joint. The head plate and binding are Ebony, and the fingerboard is Ebony with Ebony binding. The bridge is Indian Rosewood.

Avalon Ard Ri A3 330 Walnut Jumbo Guitar, 2016

Built in Newtownards, Northern Ireland, the Avalon Ard Ri A3 330 shows the influence of the company’s history with George Lowden, but also new in-house designs. Lowden Guitars is still operating and producing high quality instruments under the leadership of George Lowden. The original Lowden company was on the verge of folding in 1988 due to weak demand for acoustic guitars, a situation pressuring many builders at the time.

Martin JC16RE Aura Jumbo Cutaway Steel String, 2007

The Martin JC16RE uses what is for that company an unusual body design, a Jumbo – slightly smaller than a Dreadnought in some dimensions, and larger than an OM or 000 in virtually all body dimensions. The proportions are similar to a classical guitar, so these Jumbo models tend to have a more even tonal representation throughout the harmonic range, plus more volume. This Martin JC16RE dates to 2007 and was built at the Martin plant in Nazareth, Pennsylvania.
