Fender Precision Special Bass Lake Placid Blue, 1980

Fender Precision Special Bass Lake Placid Blue, 1980

The Fender Precision Special bass was built from 1980 to 1982 as part of a trend to modernize some of Fender’s best sellers, particularly the Precision Bass and Stratocaster as ‘The Strat’.   These instruments were built at Fender’s historic Fullerton, California plant under CBS management. Using the same basic construction and materials, the Fender Precision Bass Special starts with an Ash body and one piece Maple neck, here finished in Lake Placid Blue with matching headstock and “Fender Precision Special” decal. However, the gold plated hardware and gold metal thumb rest start to hint that there are differences.

Fender Eric Johnson Thinline Signature Stratocaster Vintage White

Fender Eric Johnson Thinline Signature Stratocaster Vintage White

This model draws from the historic work of Roger Rossmeisl, a German luthier who was responsible for a number of Rickenbacker’s most popular semi-hollow models before Fender hired him away. One of his first designs became the 1969 Fender Telecaster Thinline. Grammy award winning and worldwide respected guitarist Eric Johnson knows a thing or two about tone. In 2015 Eric approached Fender about creating a light weight and resonant strat that would complement his playing style and provide his ideal liquid and articulate tone. Two years later a design that combined the tones of his favourite semi hollow bodies and his strat seemed to do the trick. That design became the Fender Eric Johnson Thinline Signature Stratocaster.

Fender 70 Esquire Relic Blonde, 2008

Fender 70 Esquire Relic Blonde, 2008

Here is a rare Custom Shop Fender 70 Esquire Relic with Rosewood fingerboard in translucent blonde, and sporting an added Lollar neck pickup. This model was built in a run of 20 examples during 2008. The Fender Esquire was the first Electric Spanish style guitar to appear in a Fender catalog (all the others were Hawaiian or steel guitars), making its debut in the spring of 1950. This single pickup model didn’t have an adjustable truss rod, but by the fall of 1950, the two-pickup Broadcaster appeared and adjustable truss rods were standard for all the necks.

Fender 52 Telecaster Reissue Butterscotch, 2000

Fender 52 Telecaster Reissue Butterscotch, 2000

The Fender 52 Telecaster Reissue appeared in 1982, as one of the first wave of vintage reissue models based on ever-closer readings of original designs. These reissues began a few years before the 1985 sale of the Fender brand – but not the plant and fixtures – by CBS to a management group. Fender introduced the Telecaster, originally the single pickup Esquire, to the market in its 1950 catalog.
