Gibson ES-175 VOS 1959 Reissue Sunburst, 2016

The Gibson ES-175 VOS 1959 Reissue brought back the 1959 version of the classic single humbucking pickup, working player’s jazz guitar. Introduced in 1949 as a 16 inch wide, fully hollow single cutaway electric, the Gibson ES-175 first carried a single P-90 pickup in the neck position. In 1953, the ES-175D was launched with a second pickup, and that became the most popular configuration throughout the 175’s production.

Gibson Memphis ES-335 Block Markers Cherry, 2015

This Cherry Red Gibson Memphis ES-335 dates to February 7, 2015 and was built at the now-closed Memphis plant. While that plant is closed, the ES-335 is still in production, but the ‘standard’ ES-335 comes with dot position markers; the block markers seen here are now found on the “Figured – Sixties Cherry” version. This example has a relatively plain top and back, but does not have the ‘P’ – for plain – designation in the model number.

Gibson Explorer 76 Reissue Natural, 1998

The Gibson Explorer 76 Reissue is a re-build of the Explorer version built between 1975 and 1982 with Mahogany replacing the ”Korina’ or African Limba wood used on the original Explorers from 1958, 1959 and 1963. The Gibson Explorer is one of the most radical designs produced under the leadership of Ted McCarty, and when introduced was met with very little interest.

Gibson L-7 Archtop Guitar Sunburst, 1942

The Gibson L-7 Archtop Guitar appeared in 1934 as a plainer, “workingman’s” version of the L-5, Gibson’s very popular archtop used by many artists including Maybelle Carter. Its first appearance in catalogs and price lists was during 1934. In 1928, the L-5 sold for around $275, which translates to around $4000 in current prices, so these were serious investments during the Depression years. This motivated Gibson to produce lower priced models like the L-7.

Gibson SG Standard Wine Red, 1969

This Gibson SG Standard in Wine Red finish and ‘Batwing’ pickguard, is built during 1969 at the historic Parsons Street plant in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Introduced in 1961 as a radically updated version of the Les Paul, the Gibson SG Standard sported a thin, light weight double cutaway body with nearly unrestricted access to all the frets.

Here’s a real beauty – a 2018 Gibson Les Paul Classic P90 model in Ebony Black with a pair of black-covered P-90 pickups. Visually, this Gibson Les Paul Classic P90 is very striking and you can see why the term ‘Black Beauty’ was used for the initial 1954 Les Paul Customs, which had a bridge 90 and a ‘Staple Top’ AlNiCo pickup in the neck position.
