Gibson Starburst 100th Anniversary Cutaway Maple, 1994

Gibson Starburst 100th Anniversary Cutaway Maple, 1994

Built from 1992 to 1994, the Gibson Starburst Standard uses a cutaway mini-Jumbo body built of Maple, and as its name suggests features arrays of star shaped inlays. This model was popular, and Jorma Kaukonen apparently had several that he used regularly, including the blue-finished model in the Homespun Tapes clip linked here. The Gibson Starburst was a model produced for a short time in limited numbers in Bozeman, Montana and was designed chiefly by Ren Ferguson. Intended to mark the 100th anniversary of Orville Gibson’s first guitar sales, the Starburst aims towards players who need to amplify their guitars. As such, its wood choices are intended to reduce resonance and volume and thus reduce feedback.

Eastman DM1 Gypsy Jazz Style Guitar Classic Finish

Eastman DM1 Gypsy Jazz Style Guitar Classic Finish

The Eastman DM1 Gypsy Jazz Style model demonstrates that acoustic guitars do not only follow the pattern of American designs, particularly Martin and Gibson. Here we’re looking at a brand new Eastman DM1 Gypsy Jazz style guitar, in the ‘Petite Bouche’ or small soundhole style. This is a long scale instrument at 26.38 inches or 670mm, almost an inch longer than a typical Martin, and is a fairly large guitar. Construction features a solid Sitka Spruce top with layered Indian for the back and sides.

Jerry Jones Neptune 12 String Electric Red, 2008

Jerry Jones Neptune 12 String Electric Red, 2008

The Jerry Jones Neptune 12 is now a fairly unusual guitar, based on vintage Danelectro designs, and was one of the best affordable electric 12’s available before Jones closed in 2011. The plant had run since 1981 and in April 2011, Jerry Jones retired and the entire contents of the plant were sold at auction. Danelectro instruments and amplifiers were built from 1946 to 1969, guitars under that name from 1954 and had an unusual construction scheme.

Collings C10 Deluxe Parlor Guitar, 2001

Collings C10 Deluxe Parlor Guitar, 2001

The Collings C10 Deluxe parlor guitar is a small bodied model, based on instruments that were common before the launch of the dreadnought and jumbo models, which rapidly took over in the 1930s. This type of guitar provides a very balanced tone. The C10 Deluxe pairs a Sitka Spruce top with Indian Rosewood for the sides and back. The neck and body blocks are Honduran Mahogany, with Ebony used for the bridge, bound head plate and bound fingerboard.

Gibson Gary Moore Les Paul Standard Honeyburst, 2000

Gibson Gary Moore Les Paul Standard Honeyburst, 2000

The Gibson Gary Moore Les Paul was built from 2000 to 2002 at Nashville, Tennessee and reflects but doesn’t copy Moore’s 1959 Burst originally used by Peter Green in Fleetwood Mac. Taking a regular Les Paul body and neck, the Gibson Gary Moore model does away with body and neck binding, and has a wiring or magnetic configuration that mimics the ‘out of phase’ tone on Peter Green’s Burst. Green felt that the pickup had been physically reversed, but in reality one of the pickup magnets may have been reversed as a manufacturing error.
