Second Life MasterClone Banjo 2014

 Second Life MasterClone Banjo 2014

Banjo-maker Carl Arcand routinely restores older banjos to give them a ‘second life’ from his Eastern Townships shop in Ulverton, Quebec. This fine example Second Life MasterClone Banjo is still archived on his site. This instrument is assumed to be based on a 60s or 70s Gibson TB-250 ‘donor-banjo’ pot with flathead bronze tone ring and fitted to an Arcand handmade replica neck. The resurrection work was completed and the banjo first sold in 2014. This Second Life MasterClone Banjo is certainly equal or superior to any 70’s original Gibson. It is what we would call a RB-250 Mastertone “clone” banjo or “Master-Clone” banjo.

William Laskin 12-String Guitar, 1976

 William Laskin 12-String Guitar, 1976

This William Laskin 12-String seems strongly influenced by the Larrivee body design, which in turn is based on the proportions of classical guitars by Hermann Hauser. These proportions provide a full, well balanced tone with plenty of volume. This piece uses a Sitka Spruce top and Indian Rosewood for the sides, three-piece back, and the headstock overlay that carries the Canada Goose inlay. The neck is mahogany, and the bound fingerboard and bridge are Ebony.

Lado Falcon Custom Electric Solidbody Zebrawood, 1983

Lado Falcon Custom Electric Solidbody Zebrawood, 1983

The Lado Falcon is a quintessential 1980’s guitar, pairing sustain and clarity with visual effects and playability. These guitars, like those from BC Rich and other builders, provided serious alternatives to Fender and Gibson models. The Lado Guitar Company was founded by Joseph Kovacic and for many years was based at 920 Kingston Road in Toronto. The next tenant was the brand-new Guitarists’ Pro Shop run by Grant MacNeill and Dan Charman named The Twelfth Fret. Lado moved to larger quarters in Scarborough, and in 1981 to a much larger facility in Uxbridge, Ontario, about 74 kilometers north of Toronto.

William Laskin Classical Guitar, 2001

 William Laskin Classical Guitar, 2001

this guitar, built during 2001 at Laskin’s shop in Toronto, Canada, needs no decoration beyond the spectacular grain of its Brazilian Rosewood back, sides, headplate and bridge. This set shows off the key visual elements of this species – the dark veining, deep patterning, and a subtle orange glow. The top is red cedar, the neck spanish cedar, and the fingerboard ebony. The bass bout includes the Laskin Arm-rest, designed to make the player more comfortable without compromising any of the tonal characteristics of the box. It is built in the traditional Spanish method, with a ‘slipper foot’ that the sides slot into.
