Edgar Monch Hauser Style Classical Guitar, 1960

Edgar Monch Hauser Style Classical Guitar, 1960

This Edgar Monch Hauser style concert classical guitar is typical of Monch’s work while in Munich, prior to his move to Toronto around 1965. Edgar Monch was one of the more important classical guitar builders from Munich, the other being Hermann Hauser. Monch lived for some time in Toronto where he was also a highly influential teacher for many early Canadian luthiers including Jean Larrivee. He was himself a student of Marcelo Barbero in Madrid during the 1950s. Born in 1907, Edgar Monch died in 1977.

Hofner Gold Label Violin Bass Berlin Purple, 2015

Hofner Gold Label Violin Bass Berlin Purple, 2015

Here we are looking at a Hofner Gold Label Violin Bass in the 500/1 style during 2015 at the Hofner plant in Hagenau, about 35 km north of Nuremberg, Germany. The iconic violin body is Maple Laminate for feedback rejection, with a zero-fret equipped Maple neck bearing an Indian Rosewood fingerboard.  The bridge is Ebony.  This is a ‘1962’ style design but with ‘Rugby’ tuners.  For electronics,  twin “Staple” 511B pickups are installed and spaced normally, at the bridge and neck positions.  Controls are classic Hofner, with teacup knobs.

Volkert Classical Cutaway Crossover Guitar, 1994

Volkert Classical Cutaway Crossover Guitar, 1994

Here we have a custom order Volkert classical, cutaway and crossover guitar, signed and dated to 1994 at the Volkert shop in Lauf an der Pegnitz. This guitar was designed for the player’s needs, which included playing Gypsy Jazz and Flamenco styles. This interesting, well built guitar has a Florentine cutaway and, very unusually for a classical, a 14-fret neck!  Because of the player’s needs, full Golpeador or Tap Plates were installed to protect the top.

Hofner Cavern Bass LH 500/1 1961 Reissue Sunburst, 2015

Hofner Cavern Bass LH 500/1 1961 Reissue Sunburst, 2015

Here’s something a little different – a Hofner Cavern Bass LH, the left handed version of the classic 500/1 violin bass! The Hofner Cavern bass model 500/1 appeared in 1961, though that was not its name – from its first appearance at the 1956 Frankfurt Musikmesse, it was known simply as the Violin Bass. The bass earned its ‘Cavern’ moniker through frequent use in the Liverpool Cavern Club by a young bassist named Paul McCartney in The Beatles.
