Fender Mustang Bass Fretless Conversion Mocha, 1975

Fender Mustang Bass Fretless Conversion Mocha, 1975

Here we have a Fender Mustang Bass Fretless Conversion in Mocha, sometimes called Walnut, finish, built during 1975 at Fullerton California, about half way through the CBS ownership of Fender. Construction and materials followed the usual Fender pattern of the time, pairing an Alder body with a Rosewood-capped Maple neck.

Guild JF-30C Jumbo Flattop Cutaway Blonde, 1988

The Guild JF-30C is a rare bird, built in small numbers during 1988 and 1989 in Westerly, Rhode Island as a cutaway version of the 17 inch jumbo JF-30. A quirk of this example is that the label identifies it as a JC-30. Some non-cutaway JF-30 models were also identified as J-30 on the label.

 Fender Jazz Bass Black, 1973

Introduced in 1960, the Fender Jazz Bass was intended to provide a more accurate simulation of an acoustic bass sound, aimed squarely at jazz players. Here we’re looking at a Fender Jazz Bass from 1973 in a black poly finish; prior to 1968, these basses received a nitrocellulose lacquer finish.

Martin D-16A Ash Body Dreadnought Natural, 1988

Martin D-16A Ash Body Dreadnought Natural, 1988

Built in a run of 818 guitars from 1987 to 1990, the Martin D-16A is a traditional dreadnought built with Ash for the sides and back. The Dreadnought or D body first appeared in 1917 in guitars built for the Ditson Company of Boston. Martin first listed the D-18 in their catalog in 1931 as a 12-fret model and the 14-fret neck appeared in 1934. It became the single most common guitar size, only in recent years being challenged.

Fender Telecaster Bass Blonde, 1972

Fender Telecaster Bass Blonde, 1972

The Fender Telecaster Bass launched in the surprisingly late year of 1968, though its appearance is very much like the original, revolutionary 1951 Precision Bass. From a modern perspective, there isn’t a lot to the Fender Telecaster Bass. It is basically an ash or alder slab body with a one-piece maple neck bolted to it, a bridge, and from 1968 to 1972 a single coil pickup with volume and tone controls.
