This Gibson A-Jr. model A-Style mandolin in Sheraton Brown is now a century old, and still sounds great and plays well. The Gibson A-Jr. Mandolin, also known as the Gibson Junior, was the entry level for Gibson’s mandolin line from 1919 to 1927, when it became the A-0. Though classed as ‘entry level’, it was and is an excellent instrument.

The Rigel A+ Deluxe mandolin is now built by Peter Langdell in Jeffersonville, Vermont and has a unique, patented construction (U.S. Patent #D383481, awarded September 09, 1997). Rather than being bent from flat pieces in the traditional manner, the Rigel A+ Deluxe sides are carved from a solid block that supports the top and back. The back is full sized but glued on, while the top is a circular plate, somewhat like the resonator on a reso-phonic instrument.

The National RM1 Maple Walnut Resophonic Mandolin is built in San Luis Opisbo California and features a teardrop, almost ‘A Style’ body shape, but with a single 9.5 inch resonator cone. The RM1 pairs a figured Maple top with Black Walnut for the sides and carved back; the neck is figured Maple with a bound Ebony fingerboard.

The Ratliff R5 mandolin is built by hand in Church Hill, Tennessee, part of a small lineup of F style and A style mandolins. The company was originally started to produce left-handed F-Style instruments, but has grown to produce right hand models, and offers both F hole and oval hole versions. This Ratliff R5 seems to be a discontinued model, superseded by the slightly more elaborate R5 ‘Master Model’.
