Laskin Cutaway Classical Blackwood and Cedar, 2017

Laskin Cutaway Classical Blackwood and Cedar, 2017

Elegantly understated, this long-scale William Laskin Cutaway Classical features a Red Cedar top and African Blackwood for the sides, back, bridge and head plate. Here we’re looking at a Laskin Cutaway Classical, built during 2017 at his shop in Toronto. This is a longer scale instrument at 658mm or 25.9 inches – standard classical length is 650mm or 25.59 inches. The nut is also slightly wider at 53.11mm or 2.091 inches.

Epiphone by Gibson Sheraton II Vintage Sunburst, 1988

Epiphone by Gibson Sheraton II Vintage Sunburst, 1988

The Epiphone by Gibson Sheraton II appeared with the ‘by Gibson’ logo for only two years or so, ending around 1988; these were built in the Samick shops in Korea and are excellent instruments. The original Epiphone Sheraton was built from 1958 to 1970, and Gibson had purchased the remains of Epiphone 1957. Their introduction was concurrent with the launch of Gibson’s new ES-3×5 line, a revolutionary design that added a solid center block to a thin-body electric archtop.

PRS 513 Solidbody Carved Top Amber, 2008

PRS 513 Solidbody Carved Top Amber, 2008

Like all of Paul Reed Smith’s models, the PRS 513 starts with a great design, executed with top grade woods and parts and topped with an impeccable finish. Now discontinued, this model was built from 2007 to 2016. This PRS 513 dates to 2008 and is in good condition. It is not entirely original as the stock tuners have been replaced with PRS Phase II locking models. The top finish is in good shape but there is some buckle or rivet rash on the back. Fret wear is light.

Gibson SG ‘Batwing’ Standard Cherry, 2012

Gibson SG 'Batwing' Standard Cherry, 2012

The Gibson SG ‘Batwing’ Standard started appearing in 1966, displacing the smaller, treble-side pickguard, offering much more protection to the top of the guitar during enthusiastic use. The SG itself was originally introduced as the 1961 Les Paul, but without Les Paul’s input and at the end of his endorsement contract. For various reasons, the Les Paul name was dropped for 1963 production and has been the SG or ‘Solid Guitar’ since.

  Gibson LP Custom Cherry, 1984

The Gibson LP Custom – the Les Paul  Custom – appeared in 1954 and aside from 1963 to 1968 has been part of the Les Paul Lineup since then in various forms. Aside from specialty models like the Supreme, it’s always been the top of the Les Paul line, with gold plated hardware, extra binding and more Mother of Pearl inlays.  Some versions after the 1957 introduction of the new humbucking pickup,  sported three pickups.
