Jack Spira Cittern Australian Blackwood, 2005

Jack Spira Cittern Australian Blackwood, 2005

This is unusual for us to see – a Jack Spira Cittern of Australian Blackwood, built during 2005 at Spira’s shop in Boolarra, east of Melbourne. Jack Spira has been building for over 30 years, focusing on steel string guitars in regular, tenor and baritone forms, plus Irish Bouzoukis, Citterns, and Octave Mandolins. He also does repair and custom work, in particular engraved inlays. His work is highly regarded, and popular enough that few make it to the used market in Canada.

Hofner Gold Label Violin Bass Berlin Purple, 2015

Hofner Gold Label Violin Bass Berlin Purple, 2015

Here we are looking at a Hofner Gold Label Violin Bass in the 500/1 style during 2015 at the Hofner plant in Hagenau, about 35 km north of Nuremberg, Germany. The iconic violin body is Maple Laminate for feedback rejection, with a zero-fret equipped Maple neck bearing an Indian Rosewood fingerboard.  The bridge is Ebony.  This is a ‘1962’ style design but with ‘Rugby’ tuners.  For electronics,  twin “Staple” 511B pickups are installed and spaced normally, at the bridge and neck positions.  Controls are classic Hofner, with teacup knobs.

Guild X170 Manhattan Archtop Electric Sunburst, 2001

Guild X170 Manhattan Archtop Electric Sunburst, 2001

The Guild X170 Manhattan was built at the Guild plant in Westerly, Rhode Island from 1995 until 2001 when Fender relocated the shop to Tacoma, Washington. Conceived as a jazz box, where function is key but classy looks are important, the X-170 Manhattan met all its targets. This Guild X170 Manhattan is in very nice, clean condition and plays really well.  Wear is very minor, and the usual first-worn spots – the bass end of the bridge and treble pickups, where one would rest on or touch the plating – don’t show much evidence of use.   Fret wear is very light and mostly limited to the first position.

Martin 000-15M Mahogany Steel String Guitar

Martin 000-15M Mahogany Steel String Guitar

Built with a body and neck of Mahogany paired with Indian Rosewood for the fingerboard, bridge and head plate, the Martin 000-15M is a punchy, responsive guitar.  The Martin ’15’ series indicates that the trim level is fairly low, in particular there is no body or fingerboard binding, and the finish is satin.  Mahogany has long been used as an alternative wood for guitar and ukulele tops, and Martin has used it for nearly a century.
