From time to time, we get to see new and innovative designs that refer to much older ideas. This Shellback Baritone Ukulele from Rootworks is such an item. This fascinating instruments draws from the shape of half a Nautilus shell, created using Cherry veneer with a Red Cedar top.

The Gibson BB King Lucille was created for the very real needs of a constantly working guitarist dealing with the reality of stage volumes. BB King led a relatively large band, and tended to turn his amp to 10 and control volume from the guitar. This could easily result in wild feedback.

This Douglas Harrison GB jazz guitar features a stunning hand carved spalted maple top with deep vibrant flame figure, a chambered tropical mahogany body that has been subtly shaded on the edges to enhance its natural warm glow — all offset by some premium Macassar ebony utilized in the fingerboard, tailpiece, bridge and peghead veneer.

Gibson L-37 Flat Back Archtop Guitar Sunburst, 1938

Built from 1937 to 1941, the Gibson L-37 has a relatively small body – 14.75 inches wide and 3.5 inches deep – an arched top and a flat back. Some models had round sound holes, but these were rapidly disappearing in favor of F-holes.

The Gibson J-45 made its name as a workhorse guitar not long after its introduction in 1942, and they have been used by working musicians in countless gigs. Sometimes the gig needs more volume, and at some points adding a deArmond soundhole pickup was the way to go.

Guild F412 Jumbo Maple 12-String Guitar Natural, 2013

The Guild F412 has been near the top of the line for 12 string guitars, with a jumbo body and a huge sound. The F-412 and its mate, the Guild F-512 mainly differ in woods used for the sides and back – the F412 uses flamed maple and the F512 Indian Rosewood. The F412 Maple version will tend to have a brighter sound with a tighter focus on the high end, while the F512 Rosewood will be warmer and focus in a slightly lower range.
This Guild F412 dates to 2013 and was built in New Haven, Connecticut. It’s in very good condition with little wear. It’s bright, clear and well defined. This is a guitar you can really dig into.
