Gibson ES-5 Archtop Electric Guitar Sunburst, 1949

The Gibson ES-5 appeared in 1949 and was the first ES – Electric Spanish – guitar with three pickups. Originally equipped only with rotary pots for volume and tone controls, this model was revised in 1955 as the ES-5 Switchmaster. Using a full size cutaway archtop body made with maple laminates for feedback rejection, the original ES-5 had individual volume controls and one master tone control. Depending on the pot rotation, you could have all three pickups at any blend level.

National Resolectric Revolver Sunburst, 2014

The National Resolectric Revolver is a hybrid instrument, combining a single cone resonator with both a Lollar P-90 and a Highlander undersaddle piezo pickup system on a thin body. The unmistakable tone and bark of a resophonic guitar are available in a compact, lightweight package that works on well amplified stages.The National Resolectric Revolver is similar to the National Resolectric – the difference is in the woods used.

Gibson ES-125 Archtop Electric Guitar Sunburst, 1961

Starting its life as the ES-100, the Gibson ES-125 was built as an affordable quality electrified archtop guitar for jazz and combo guitarists. It appeared as the ES-125 from 1941 to 1943, with wartime restrictions suspending production until 1946. The ES-125 stayed in production until 1970, but in the 1950’s thinline and cutaway versions appeared as the ES-1235T and ES-125TC, and an extra pickup at the bridge was available in the ES-125 TDC model.

Gibson ES-125 Archtop Electric Guitar Sunburst, 1954

This Gibson ES-100 dates to 1954 and appears to be all original, though the pickguard is missing and the original case is long gone – it would have been faux-gator fibre (cardboard), and those often don’t age well. The hardware is typical of this period. For example, the Kluson Deluxe tuners have no lettering but do have the hole for the tuner post, and these were used from 1953 to mid 1956. Translucent Gold ‘Speed’ or ‘Hatbox’ type knobs are used.

Gibson ES-125 Archtop Electric with P-90, Sunburst 1961

The Gibson ES-125 made its debut in 1941 as a student model – an affordable archtop electric, of maple laminate, one pickup and little decoration. Originally fitted with a ‘Blade’ style pickup, by 1947 a standard P90 was used. Production lasted until 1970. In 1956, the new thin body ‘ES-125T’ appeared and was available with two pickups and a cutaway.

Gibson J-160E Steel String Acoustic Electric Sunburst, 1966

The Gibson J-160E is one of the most recognisable steel string guitars, due largely to a series of recordings and performances during the early 1960s by The Beatles. Both John Lennon and George Harrison had J-160E models, while McCartney used an Epiphone Texan strung as left handed. Though it looks a lot like the traditional classic J-45 round shoulder dreadnought, the Gibson J-160E has major structural differences. First, because the design goal was to reduce feedback at high stage volumes, the guitar body is entirely laminate, including the top. Rather than X-braced, the top is strongly Ladder braced.
