Jean Larrivee Classical Guitar, 1974

 Jean Larrivee Classical Guitar, 1974

Here we have a Jean Larrivee classical guitar with Cedar top and Indian Rosewood back and sides, built during 1975 at the Toronto shop. At this time, Larrivee and others were working with the late Edgar Monch, who was still in Toronto and the influences are visible on this Hauser style guitar. Jean Larrivee has been one of the more influential Canadian guitar builders. Building his first instruments in his home in Toronto during the late 1960’s, Larrivee worked with and learned from Monch. As his interest, skill and collection of tools and wood increased, he moved to ever-larger quarters and attracted his own trainees.

Gurian JM Jumbo Mahogany Steel String Guitar, 1979

Gurian JM Jumbo Mahogany Steel String Guitar, 1979

During the 1970s Michael Gurian built many guitars like this Gurian JM, or Jumbo Mahogany guitar, from his factory in Hinsdale, New Hampshire. However a devastating fire in 1979, and the rising tide of synthesizer music forced Gurian to fold in 1981 as far as building guitars was concerned. The Gurian JM or Jumbo Mahogany is a large body guitar, Gurian’s largest, but is more akin to an OM or Classical guitar than a traditional Jumbo steel string like the Gibson J-200. As the name suggests, the JM uses Mahogany for the back, sides and neck, with Sitka Spruce for the top.

Larrivee OM 09K Koa Steel String Guitar, 1996

Larrivee OM 09K Koa Steel String Guitar, 1996

The Larrivee OM 09K is the Koa version of the normally Rosewood bodied OM-09 Artist model, based on the classic Orchestra Model design dating back to the late 1920s. This body design originated with Martin, and is very similar to the 000 models, but the OM has a longer scale length – 25.5 inches compared to the 000’s 24.9 inches. This increases brightness, clarity and volume. The OM body also produces a well balanced tonal representation throughout the spectrum.

Martin D 28 Dreadnought Steel String Guitar, 2012

Martin D 28 Dreadnought Steel String Guitar, 2012

This particular Martin D 28 was built during 2012 as part of the Standard Series at the Martin plant in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. It is in overall good condition. It has been well cared for but has been used as intended, so there is honest play wear in the usual locations. In particular, there is some pick wear to the top finish on the treble side of the fingerboard tag.   There is also light to moderate fret wear in the lower positions.
