Fender Custom Shop ’69 Stratocaster Relic White, 2006

Fender Custom Shop '69 Stratocaster Relic White, 2006

Here we’re looking at a Fender Custom Shop ’69 Stratocaster in the Relic version, built during 2006 at the Fender plant in Corona, California. It’s in very good condition with only light wear – beyond the relic treatment! Closely following 1969 specs, the body is Alder and the neck is Maple. There’s no ‘skunk stripe’ on the back of the neck – the rolled-edge fingerboard is a piece of Maple, applied in the same way a Rosewood board would be, and the truss rod was installed from the front of the neck before the fingerboard was installed.

Gibson Les Paul Custom 62 Reissue White, 2000

Gibson Les Paul Custom 62 Reissue White, 2000

The Gibson Les Paul Custom 62 Reissue recalls the complete redesign of the Les Paul, triggered in 1961 by poor sales, ironic for a guitar that’s now very highly valued. By 1963, the model was renamed at Les Paul’s request, and Gibson called it the ‘SG’. Like the original, the Les Paul Custom 62 Reissue uses a contoured Mahogany slab body with a Mahogany neck. Like previous Les Paul Custom models, the fingerboard is Ebony instead of Rosewood, and the position markers are Mother of Pearl blocks.

Well known for his work with bands like Guns ‘N Roses, Velvet Revolver and many side projects, it’s natural that there would be a Gibson Slash Signature Les Paul.

Gibson Les Paul Standard Sunburst, 1988

Gibson Les Paul Standard Sunburst, 1988

Gibson has reissued the Les Paul Standard Sunburst in its 1958 form several times, and here’s a nice one that dates to 1988 and carries Tom Holmes pickups. Built in the traditional manner, this Gibson Les Paul Standard Sunburst has a very nicely bookmatched, flame Maple top with a well faded cherry sunburst, now down to a tea-like tint. As usual, the body back and neck are Mahogany, with Indian Rosewood for the bound fingerboard.

Fender 1951 Precision Bass Reissue ‘CIJ’ Sunburst, 2002

Fender 1951 Precision Bass Reissue 'CIJ' Sunburst, 2002

The Fender 1951 Precision Bass ‘CIJ’ or ‘Crafted In Japan’ model, not a Squier, is built around 2002 in Japan by Tokai or Dyna Gakki.  The music world changed with the appearance of the Fender 1951 Precision Bass. Though it took a few years to win over every genre, this new instrument immediately began displacing the upright bass, for very practical reasons.

Replica Bigsby 49 Standard Birdseye Maple, 2019

Replica Bigsby 49 Standard Birdseye Maple, 2019

Here is a very unusual guitar – a Replica Bigsby 49 Standard, reproducing one of the very few, very first, very influential solidbody electric guitars. Paul Arthur Bigsby was a machinist with a strong interest in motorcycles and, as it turned out, guitars. He built a number of pedal steel guitars, perhaps 50 Spanish style guitars, and designed a now widely used hand vibrato tailpiece for Merle Travis. As well, he replaced the neck on Merle’s Martin, with a much slimmer neck sporting the distinctive Bigsby headstock. This neck aided the Travis style, which involves wrapping the left thumb over the low strings for bass notes.
