Martin D-28 Brazilian Rosewood Natural, 1958

Introduced in 1931 but not the first appearance of the Dreadnought, the Martin D-28 quickly rose to become one of the standard, benchmark guitars. From 1931 to 1934, the D-28 had a 12-fret neck, soon changed to 14 frets as banjo players migrated to guitar. Here we’re looking at a Martin D-28 built around July of 1958, with all of the standard features of that time. The top is Sitka Spruce; Adirondack had become unavailable by 1942 as war materiel demands led to overharvesting.

GVR Hauser Model Classical Guitar, 2010

Built during 2010 in Los Angeles, this GVR Hauser classical guitar by German Vazquez Rubio is in very good, clean condition with only light wear. Constructed in the traditional Spanish manner with the sides integrated into the heel, this example sports a Spruce top with herringbone rosette, Indian Rosewood for the sides and back, and curly Maple binding.

The Alhambra Mengual & Margarit C Series Concert Classical Guitar, built by master luthiers Jose Mengual and Javier Margarit, feature lattice braced tops and French Polish finish, with the highest quality materials used throughout. Two versions are offered by The Twelfth Fret, with Red Cedar or European Spruce for the top. The Alhambra site lists only the Cedar version, as seen here in this 2011 example.

The Gibson Sheryl Crow Signature model is based on her 1962 Gibson Country Western model, which she’d been touring and recording with for years. Concerned that it should be protected, she approached Gibson for a replacement – and they responded with the Sheryl Crow Signature model.

Bourgeois Mahogany D Aged Tone Natural, 2013 –

The Bourgeois Mahogany D is a master luthier’s take on the venerable D-18 pairing of Adirondack Spruce with Mahogany back, sides and neck, and the Aged Tone Spruce gives it an extra sparkle and depth. Adirondack Spruce has a slightly wider grain structure compared to Sitka, but is still extremely strong and is reputed to have somewhat more ‘headroom’ when played aggressively, as might sometimes occur in a Bluegrass or Country context.
