Collings OM 2H Orchestra Model Natural, 1998

Collings OM 2H Orchestra Model Natural, 1998

‼️Reduced‼️ The Collings OM2H is based on the venerable ‘Orchestra Model’ design, which is a bit bigger than the 000 size and has a longer scale length – 25.5 inches instead of 24.9. This model pairs a Sitka Spruce top with Indian Rosewood for the back and sides. The neck is Mahogany, as are the body blocks, and Ebony is used for the bridge and bound fingerboard and head plate. Inlay material is Abalone for the ‘snowflake’ position markers and Mother of Pearl for the headstock Collings logo.

Hans Schmidt Classical Guitar Brazilian Rosewood, 1980s

Hans Schmidt Classical Guitar Brazilian Rosewood, 1980s

Here we have a Hans Schmidt Classical Guitar, built in Rock Creek BC during the 1980s and featuring a lovely Brazilian Rosewood set for the sides, back and head plate. While there isn’t a lot of information available,  Hans Schmidt apparently built classical guitars and Celtic Harps during the 1980s and 1990s in his workshops in the southern central area of British Columbia,  at the lower end of the Okanagan Valley, not far from the Canadian border.  This is a spectacular area!

Martin JC16RE Aura Jumbo Cutaway Steel String, 2007

Martin JC16RE Aura Jumbo Cutaway Steel String, 2007

The Martin JC16RE uses what is for that company an unusual body design, a Jumbo – slightly smaller than a Dreadnought in some dimensions, and larger than an OM or 000 in virtually all body dimensions. The proportions are similar to a classical guitar, so these Jumbo models tend to have a more even tonal representation throughout the harmonic range, plus more volume. This Martin JC16RE dates to 2007 and was built at the Martin plant in Nazareth, Pennsylvania.

Taylor 712 with Fishman Pickup, 1997

Taylor 712 with Fishman Pickup, 1997

Here’s a lovely Taylor 712 from 1997, before pickups were stock, and it’s a very nice guitar for fingerstyle playing – well rounded with full, evenly balanced tone. The Taylor 712 in this form is no longer available. The 712 is now mostly presented as the Taylor 712 ce, for Cutaway Electric, and most often in 12-fret neck format, with slotted peghead. However, the construction has the same basis in the Grand Concert body, roughly equivalent to a Martin OOO body size. It features a Sitka Spruce top paired with Indian Rosewood for the back and sides, Mahogany for the body blocks, linings and neck, and Ebony for the bridge and bound fingerboard.

Sold‼ C. F. Martin D28 Brazilian Rosewood Dreadnought, 1969

Sold‼ C. F. Martin D28 Brazilian Rosewood Dreadnought, 1969

This C.F. Martin D28 built during 1969 at the Martin facility in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. In keeping with the time it was built, the Rosewood used for the sides, back and head plate was sourced in Brazil. The top is Sitka Spruce, the neck and body blocks Mahogany, and the fingerboard and bridge are Ebony. Grover Roto-Matic tuners are installed and a new bone saddle and bridge pins have been added. The headstock is the late 1960’s rounded shape, with a relatively slim profile neck. It’s very comfortable to play.

Collings OM2H Orchestra Model Sitka Top, 2008

Collings OM2H Orchestra Model Sitka Top, 2008

The Collings OM2H Orchestra Model is a top quality take on the classic OM guitars that date back to the late 1920s, as the great migration of banjo players to guitar began. The OM is based on the 12-fret neck, 1928 Martin 000 body size, which was modified to allow the 14 fret neck that banjo players needed for higher position chording. The upper bouts were ‘flattened’ to accommodate this neck. The 14 fret neck was so successful that on steel string guitars, it completely displaced the 12-fret neck. It’s only in the last few years that builders have been offering 12 fret necks again.
