Gibson SG Standard Heritage Cherry, 1996

Gibson SG Standard Heritage Cherry, 1996

The Gibson SG Standard is the successor to the Les Paul Standard, by way of Gibson’s 1961 complete redesign of the Les Paul models, and the loss of the Les Paul name that followed. There are a few small dents here and there, which have not broken the finish. Fret wear is light and the guitar plays well and is a comfortable weight – interestingly both examples weigh the same, 3.25kg or 7.15 pounds.

Epiphone Elitist Les Paul Standard Sunburst, 2004

Epiphone Elitist Les Paul Standard Sunburst, 2004

The Epiphone Elitist Les Paul Standard was built from 2003 to 2009, though there were earlier models under the ‘Epiphone Elite’ name. However, it turned out that Ovation was already using the ‘Elite’ name. These guitars were built by Fuju-Gen at Matsumoto, Japan for Gibson, as the high end of the Epiphone line. They use US made hardware and top quality woods. The fit and finish are top quality.

Gibson SG SR VOS 1961 Les Paul Custom Shop Cherry, 2006

Gibson SG SR VOS 1961 Les Paul Custom Shop Cherry, 2006

Here’s a wonderful piece that takes us all back. This is a Gibson SG SR VOS 1961, a reissue of the reworked 1961 Les Paul Standard with Lyre Vibrola and Cherry finish. This was the second version of the SG build – the initial production run had a side-to-side vibrola tailpiece. That was quickly replaced with the Maestro Lyre Vibrola, and this form was the SG Standard until the mid 1960’s. By 1963, the Les Paul name was removed for contractual reasons.

Gibson Midtown Standard Thinline Electric Red, 2011

Gibson Midtown Standard Thinline Electric Red, 2011

The Gibson Midtown appeared in late 2011 and was ultimately available in three versions – the Standard, Custom, and Standard P-90. It’s a chambered, F-Hole double cutaway design, but with a flat top and back. It also has a slightly tapered headstock, unusual for Gibson models. Here we’re looking at an early production Gibson Midtown Standard in Cherry Red finish. Its serial number dates it to October 28th, 2011 and construction at the Gibson shop in Nashville, Tennessee.

Gibson SJ-200 Standard Steel String Guitar Sunburst, 2015

Gibson SJ-200 Standard Steel String Guitar Sunburst, 2015

Introduced in 1938, the Gibson SJ-200 was the top of the line, ‘King of the Flat Tops’, the largest and fanciest non-archtop model. In 1938, the price was a whopping $200, and as an option, you could have your name inlaid on the fingerboard for $50! It went straight to stages and studios, and has been there since. The SJ-200 has appeared on countless recordings, not just Country – both Pete Townsend and Jimmy Page relied on it.
