C. F. Martin OM-21 Steel String Guitar, 2012

  C. F. Martin OM-21 Steel String Guitar, 2012

The Martin OM or Orchestra Model design appeared in 1930, and has been built in various forms. The C. F. Martin OM-21 uses ’21’ level appointments – Indian Rosewood back and sides, single layer binding, and Ebony for the bridge and bound fingerboard. The OM design fits between the full size ‘D’ body dreadnoughts, and the smaller, rounder single or double ‘O’ b body guitars.

Mark Kett 13 Fret Brazilian Rosewood 000 Body Guitar, 2010

Mark Kett 13 Fret Brazilian Rosewood 000 Body Guitar, 2010

It’s fairly unusual to see a Mark Kett guitar for sale. His order book currently extends to 2021, so new guitars don’t appear in shops. His custom inlay work is more visible, as it appears on guitars by other builders including Sergei de Jonge, David Wren, Bourgeois Guitars, Linda Manzer, Frank Brothers, Marc Beneteau, and many others. His work was included in the ‘Group of Seven’ guitar set at the McMichael Gallery.

C. F. Martin OM-35 Steel String Guitar Sunburst, 2006

  C. F. Martin OM-35 Steel String Guitar Sunburst, 2006

The C. F. Martin OM-35  was built between 2003 and 2007, drawing from the excellent tonal results of the OM design and adding ’35’ level features. While the OM-35 itself is discontinued, it is now available with a standard pickup as the OM-35E. The Martin OM is itself based on the OOO or ‘Triple O’ body design, but adds a longer scale length neck – 25.4 inches instead of the Triple O’s 24.9 inches. This increases the string tension, making the top work a bit harder to deliver a bit more volume and clarity.

Taylor 618e Grand Concert Steel String Maple, 2011

Taylor 618e Grand Concert Steel String Maple, 2011

The Taylor 618e brings to mind the classic jumbo maple guitars used by top artists, and delivers a full, rich tone with lots of clarity and definition. Built using Taylor’s largest body shape like the jumbo Guilds and Gibson J-200 models, the 618e pairs a Sitka Spruce top with flamed Maple for the back, sides, and neck. Ebony is used for the bridge and bound fingerboard and headplate. The Taylor logo and fingerboard inlays are Mother of Pearl, and the linings, neck and tail blocks are Mahogany.
