Based on the ‘Super Strat’ concept with a pair of humbuckers and two-point, non-locking trem, the Charvel ProMod DK24 combines and alder body with roasted maple neck for full, clear tone and fairly lightweight. This is a very comfortable guitar to play for long hours. The locking tuners make short work of string changes under pressure.

Gibson Earl Scruggs Standard Mastertone Banjo, 2001

Built from 1994 until a devastating flood hit Nashville in 2010, the Gibson Earl Scruggs Standard banjo reproduced the classic banjo that used by Scruggs. At first, the model was just named ‘Earl Scruggs’. The word ‘Standard’ was added in 1992, because two newer Scruggs models were introduced for the 1992 year, the ’49 Classic and the Golden Deluxe. Gibson Banjos, including the Gibson Earl Scruggs Standard Mastertone Banjo, are no longer available.

Fender SRV Signature Stratocaster Sunburst, 1993

Here we’re looking at a Fender SRV Signature Series Stratocaster, built during 1993 at the Fender plant in Corona, California. Like Number One, it uses an Alder body paired with a Maple neck and a “slab” board fingerboard – however, the fingerboard is apparently Pau Ferro, not Rosewood. In 1963, Fender had not quite worked out how to wrap a thin layer of Rosewood over a curved neck on a production line basis, so a flat board was installed and the top received the crown. And, in 1963, the fingerboard would have been Brazilian Rosewood.

Gibson F12 Mandolin Sunburst, 1949

The Gibson F12 mandolin was built for two periods – from 1934 to 1937, and from 1948 to 1980. This example is one of 85 built during 1949. Gibson mandolins broke new ground when Orville Gibson combined traditional Mandolin and Violin designs in the closing years of the 19th century. To this point, mandolins mostly followed the European style with a bowl back and flat, folded top.

American Archtop Unger American Dream Archtop Guitar Natural, 2002

This Unger archtop – an American Dream model, was built with solid hand-carved German Spruce top, hand carved European Flame Maple back, and Flame Maple for the sides and neck. The body is unbound. The neck carries an unbound Ebony fingerboard, and Ebony is also used for the bridge, tailpiece, and pickguard. Schaller tuners are mounted on the head and a Kent Armstrong pickup is mounted to the top in the neck position, and volume and tone controls are mounted beside the lower part of the the treble F-hole.

Fender Precision Bass Sunburst, 1964

Introduced in 1954, the Fender Precision Bass was quickly adopted by bass players. It was an elegant solution to a few large problems related to the large size of an upright bass, its tendency to feed back as amplified volumes consistently rose, and the ease with which notes could be out of tune on a fretless fingerboard. The P Bass was compact, lightweight, durable and reliable, would not feed back, and would be precisely in tune with the rest of the band.
