Gibson Firebird V Reissue Vintage Sunburst, 2006

Gibson Firebird V Reissue Vintage Sunburst, 2006

Introduced in 1963, the Gibson Firebird V with its neck-through design was a radical departure from most of the guitars available at the time. The original models were referred to as ‘Reverse’ as the offset body used the opposite orientation as most guitar bodies, particularly Fender’s then-new Offset-body Jazzmaster and Jaguar.

Gibson Les Paul Model Gold Top, 1952

Gibson Les Paul Model Gold Top, 1952

In 1952, the Gibson Les Paul Model made its first appearance as a single cutaway, solid body guitar with the now-standard combination of a carved Maple cap on a Mahogany body, with a Mahogany neck and Rosewood fingerboard. The available finish was a metallic gold top with clear lacquer over the rest of the guitar. The earliest models had an un-bound fingerboard, but this quickly changed to a bound fingerboard. At the time, ‘Rosewood’ came from Brazil.

Gibson Super 400 Archtop Electric Sunburst, 1954

Gibson Super 400 Archtop Electric Sunburst, 1954

The Gibson Super 400 strode above most others when giant archtops roamed the earth, and is still one of the largest production guitars made. Making its introduction in 1934 as the ‘Super L-5 Deluxe’, the non-cutaway model was quickly joined by a cutaway model, initially named the Super 400 P for ‘Premiere’. The ‘400’ designation was originally a reference to the price.

Gibson Les Paul Junior Cherry, 1959

The Gibson Les Paul Junior was introduced in 1954 as a single cutaway slab bodied design, essentially a Les Paul without the carved Maple (or Mahogany, in the case of the Custom) cap. Intended as an entry level model, it carried a single P-90 pickup and very little decoration.

Gibson ES-165 Herb Ellis 'Roadworn' Sunburst, 2004

Built from 1991 to 2011, the Gibson ES-165 Herb Ellis draws from the classic workhorse ES-175, but with a single neck-mount ‘floating’ pickup; some variations used a top-mount humbucker. The Herb Ellis Plus used a pair of traditional full-sized, top-mount humbuckers.
