Gibson ES-339 Thinline Archtop Custom Shop Sunburst, 2011

The Gibson ES-339 Thinline Archtop has everything the classic and very successful ES-335 offers, but with a comfortable, slightly scaled down body. Originating during 2007 from the Gibson Memphis Custom Shop, the ES-339 found immediate acceptance. The Gibson Memphis plant has now closed due to restructuring, so any future models will likely come from Nashville.

Harrison GB Custom Blister Maple Top Thinline Archtop, 2019

This Harrison GB Custom example features a carved Maple, F-hole top with ‘blister’ figuring on a Mahogany body, routed out to provide a fully hollow body. The neck uses three pieces of Mahogany, with a Macassar Ebony for the fingerboard, headplate, tailpiece and bridge. Binding is flamed Maple. Gotoh 510 21:1 ratio tuners with gold tinting provide smooth, accurate tuning. The hand built tailpiece is solid and designed to allow fast string changes. The frets are stainless steel, which significantly reduces the rate of fret wear.

Gibson ES-335TD Thinline Electric Guitar Walnut, 1975

The Gibson ES-335TD was an immediate hit at its 1958 introduction as a thinline, two pickup, double cutaway archtop electric. It addressed many of the needs professional guitarists had dealing with ever-increasing stage volumes while retaining the classic archtop tone profile. Over the years, the specs have changed somewhat, but the model has remained in constant production and has been seen and heard on countless stages and studios.

Ibanez AS80 Artist Thinline Electric Cherry, 1983

Produced in the early 1980’s in Japan and not as common as the much fancier AS100 and AS200 models, the Ibanez AS80 was the equivalent of an ES-335. This guitar is from the period when Ibanez fully established themselves as a builder of high quality guitars that were not simply straight copies of US models. Built using maple laminates for the body, and solid maple for the center block and rosewood-fingerboard neck, the AS80 is a straight ahead thinline archtop electric lacking the ‘bling’ of the higher-numbered models.

Hamer USA Artist P90 Silver Metallic, 1999

Here we have a Hamer USA Artist in silver metallic, built during 1999 in New Hartford, Connecticut, at the parent Kaman plant. It uses Mahogany for the neck and chambered body, and adds a Rosewood fingerboard. A pair of Duncan P-90 style pickups feed a pickup selector, individual volumes and a master tone control. Grover Roto-Matic tuners are at the head and a tune-o-matic style bridge and stop tailpiece are used.

Hofner 1961 Cavern Bass 500/1 Left Handed Sunburst, 2015

The Hofner 1961 Cavern bass was very popular in Europe during the late 1950s and early 1960’s. American built instruments were rare and expensive, and use by wildly successful bands such as The Beatles made everyone want one. At the time, the tiny Cavern Club in London was one of the key venues for aspiring bands to appear, and The Beatles played there so often the club name became closely associated with the band.
