There are a few instruments that immediately bring to mind particular artists, and the Hofner Beatle Bass is one of them. The violin-shaped hollowbody Hofner bass was used by Paul McCartney on most of the earlier Beatles recordings and tours – until he shifted to a Rickenbacker bass. The association is so strong that the Hofner’s real designation, the 500/1, is relatively unknown.

From 2006, this is a 1962 Reisssue Beatle Bass model, built by Hofner in Hagenau, Bavaria. It is in good condition, strung with flatwound strings, and comes with the original hardshell case. There’s a small amount of corrosion on the pickup covers and tailpiece, and a small bit of finish separation at the heel cap. Fretwear is very light, and the finish is very clean. These are very nice instruments to play – they are so light weight, and the short scale makes for a low-strength experience.
