Gibson ES-175 Figured Top Tobacco Sunburst, 2006

Here we have a Gibson ES-175 figured top, in a classic Tobacco Sunburst, built during mid-2006 at the now-closed Gibson Memphis plant.   For 2016,  the ES-175 Figured top was featured as a distinct model, noted on the label, but here this is a standard ES-175 model.   The ES-175 was discontinued in 2017.

Gibson introduced the “Electric Spanish ES-175”, named for its initial $175.00 sell price, in 1949. The term ‘Electric Spanish’ refers to how the guitar is held, distinct from Hawaiian models played with a steel. Until 1957, the ES-175 carried P-90 pickups. This was not only Gibson’s first model with a Florentine cutaway, but also one of the first guitars to be outfitted in 1957 with the new patent applied for humbucking pickups!

This Gibson ES-175 figured top model dates to June 13, 2006 and is in overall good condition with light play wear to the finish and frets. It plays very well, and the figured top and back really stand out with the sunburst finish. It’s a very classy instrument.

Like all other examples of the ES-175, the fully-hollow body is of Laminate Maple construction. The neck is Mahogany with a bound Indian Rosewood fingerboard and split-parallelogram position markers. The bridge base is also Indian Rosewood and supports a standard Tune-O-Matic bridge. The tailpiece is the distinctive three-diamond trapeze design. Tuners are Gibson Deluxe models with plastic ‘Keystone’ buttons. For electronics, a pair of Classic ’57 humbuckers feed through a three-position switch and individual volume and tone controls.
