Rickenbacker 4001FL Fretless Maple Glo 1978

Only available as a special order during the 1960s and based closely on the base 4001 model, the Rickenbacker 4001FL was offered from 1968 until the 4001 was discontinued in 1989. The key differences between the 4001 and the Rickenbacker 4001FL are in the fingerboard and binding. Naturally, the bound Padouk fingerboard is fretless, but is not a modified fretted board. Some builders will use a fretted board, filling the slots with veneer, giving visible markings an an aid to intonation.

Gibson 1942 Banner J-45, Vintage Sunburst Limited Edition

The Gibson 1942 Banner J-45 reproduces in as many ways as possible the initial 1942 models. I have to say that Gibson’s done a fantastic job in designing and building this guitar. It’s very light, as the originals were, and uses thermally aged Adirondack Spruce for the top, and Mahogany for the rest of the guitar, except for the Indian Rosewood bridge and Fingerboard. This model does have a truss rod; from time to time during the war, Gibson would run out of the steel rod, and some of their guitars from the era didn’t get them.

Sold‼ Takamine DSF48C Santa Fe Steel String, 2002

The Takamine DSF48c Santa Fe is now discontinued, but replaced by the TSF48c – the difference is in the installed preamp, while the rest of the guitar is unchanged. Takamine was one of the first companies to market a successful pickup-equipped steel string guitar, and one of their key developments was with the preamp and EQ systems. For a time, it seemed every Country stage had at least one Takamine.

Rainsong H-DR1000LN2T Left Handed Carbon Fibre Copper Burst 2018

The Rainsong H-DR1000LN2T takes the proven standard Dreadnought design, and builds it in a Left Handed model using Carbon Fibre and glass fibre, adding a Fishman Prefix pickup and wrapping it in a Copper Burst finish. Rainsong guitars are built in the USA. Now based in Woodinville, Washington, the company started in Kihei, Maui, Hawaii and builds designs by company founder John Decker.

Martin D-21 Dreadnought Brazilian Rosewood, 1958

Built from 1955 to 1969, the Martin D-21 was a bridge between the Mahogany D-18 and the Rosewood D-28 models, with Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides but without extra binding or decoration. Martin stopped building the D-21 about the same time their stocks of Brazilian Rosewood were exhausted, and demand for the model was not enough to justify shifting it to Indian Rosewood.

Every year at the LA NAMM show I find something unique and wonderful. Mid-East Music specializes in handcrafted historic and ethnic instruments. Unlike other sources I’ve encountered, they understand and service the instruments they sell and control and participate in the manufacture process. Hand made in Pakistan, these instruments are remarkably cleanly built: accurate joinery, clean fit and finish. I was VERY impressed by the overall quality and appearance and the prices are a fraction of what we commonly see in second hand historic Lutes and Baroque guitars.

At last I can offer a completely playable historic Lute and Baroque guitar for a price that “makes sense” to most of my clients who simply want to experiment with this era of music. These instruments are “the real thing” at an affordable price. These instruments even come with lightweight but solidly made hardshell cases !
