The Gretsch 6120 Chet Atkins appeared in 1954 as a 16 inch wide 2.75 inch deep, single cutaway double pickup model, but for 1962 the new closed ElectroTone body provided a second cutaway shallower depth at 2.25 inches and faux F-Holes.

When the Gibson ES-355 appeared alongside the ES-335 and ES-345 appeared in 1958, they were a hit and the ES-335 was the top of the line, with all the extras included as standard. As stock, it always included a vibrato tailpiece – either a Bigsby, a Maestro Vibrola, or the all-new Sideways Vibrola. In addition, the ES-355 was wired in ‘Stereo’ with two jacks so each pickup could go to a separate amplifier or channel.

The Gibson Firebird Studio 2017 T is a new version of the ‘reverse’ body Firebird, using set neck construction and standard humbucking pickups. Available in Pelham Blue and Vintage Burst, this is a great alternative to an SG. The first Firebirds appeared in 1963 in the ‘Reverse’ body shape – referring to the lower, treble cutaway ‘horn’ being longer than the usual bass side, and with neck-through construction.

For 1979, the 25th Anniversary of the Fender Stratocaster’s 1954 introduction, Fender naturally wanted to release a commemorative model. It was first available in white, then the silver associated with 25th anniversaries, and finally also in a translucent red. Many of the silver finishes have yellowed to a gold colour, as can be seen here.

 Suhr Modern Pro Solidbody Electric Black Cherry Metallic, 2011

The Suhr Modern features an alder body, maple neck with 24-fret  rosewood fingerboard, modern elliptical profile and larger Stainless Steel frets, Sperzel locking tuners, and a Gotoh 510 2-post trem bridge. For electronics, it has custom JS (for John Suhr) pickups and an HSH configuration. The controls are simple, a 5-way selector switch and master volume and tone, but the tone control uses a push-pull pot to allow splitting the neck pickup.
