Designed to be inexpensive and readily available to the masses, Danelectro and Silvertone guitars were built using common materials, those these were sometimes unusual for instruments. Many of these guitars had a poplar core with formica or masonite tops and backs, with leatherette trim on the sides.

Traditionally, the Tres has been a smaller instrument, but a standard acoustic guitar can be easily adapted by altering the bridge, saddle and nut. Tuning is typically G4/G3, C4/C4, and E4/E3 or E4/E4.
