The folks at National Reso-phonic Guitars are constantly experimenting with new models, as well as tweaking their existing models to squeeze out even more tone and response … one of the advantages of being a small production company! Their latest endeavor is the release of their new reproduction of the Triolian.

The 14-fret to the body Style O was introduced in 1935 by the National Stringed Instrument Corporation. It came with either the Traditional Sieve pattern coverplate or the newly introduced Chicken Foot coverplate. in 1935 this guitar had a slotted headstock with a decal. In 1936 it went to the solid peghead style with a rosewood overlay, inlaid with a pearloid banner logo and was produced until 1938. From 1939 to 1941 it had what was called a paddle headstock with a black phenolic overlay and a metal shield logo. This instrument originally sold for $62.50 and in 1939 the price was increased to $65.00
A couple of times every year, we are lucky enough to get our hands on one of these beauties: the Resonator Concert Maple Ukulele from National Guitars. In the past, we have featured a few Custom versions with extra detailing and appointments. Today, we have the standard version available; same great sound and feel at an even better price. This instrument is a performer’s dream. Thanks to the 5 7/8″ spun resonator cone, the National Uke gives more volume and punch than any other Uke available. Most guitarists, myself included, get hand cramps just looking at a standard soprano Uke, but the National is built to a 15″ concert scale, making it far more comfortable to play. The Grover 4 B tuners are smooth and accurate, and like every instrument National builds, the quality and craftsmanship is top notch.
When played the Michael Dunn Weissenborn Hawaiian Guitar – entire instrument – resonates on my lap. Pick it up while the strings are still ringing and everywhere on the body and neck I sense equally strong vibrations through my fingertips. It seems to be giving off sound from every surface!
