Today, we are proud to feature a very special guitar: the Martin D-28 1995 CFM IV 55th Birthday Anniversary model. Built in honor of Chris Martin’s continuing dedication to the Martin Guitar Company, this guitar is a historic reissue based on the specs of a 1955 D-28. To celebrate Chris Martin’s 55th birthday, Martin is building 55 of these beautiful guitars. We have only 1 available; numbered 24/55.

According to C. F. Martin III, the 14-fret neck was developed in late 1929. Prior to the period, guitars were generally equipped with a 12-fret neck. As the story goes, a renowned plectrum banjoist of the day, Perry Bechtel, suggested to Frank Henry Martin that he make a guitar with a 14-fret neck. Bechtel reasoned that the longer neck would increase the guitar’s range and make it a more versatile instrument. Following Bechtel’s advice, Martin introduced a guitar with the longer neck and dubbed it an “Orchestra Model.”

I don’t find it surprising that lovers of mahogany are singing the praises of these instruments … it is the folks who come in our store insisting that rosewood is a much more viable tonewood … then hear one of Bill’s D or OM1 guitars and fall completely and hopelessly in love!
